Parineeti Chopra is an Indian actress who appears in Hindi films.
After studying Finance in England, she returned to India during the 2009
economic crisis and joined Yash Raj Films as a publicist. In 2011, she
was signed by Aditya Chopra for a three-films contract with Yash Raj
Films and made her screen debut in a supporting role in Maneesh Sharma's
Ladies VS Ricky Bahl. She won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut
and was nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. In
2012, she received critical and commercial success for Ishaqzaade.
Early life
Born as Parineeti Chopra into a Hindu Punjabi family in Ambala, Haryana.
Her father, Pawan Chopra is a business man and supplier of the Indian
Army, her mother is Reena Chopra, she has two brothers, and actress
Priyanka Chopra is her cousin. Chopra did her schooling at the Convent
of Jesus and Mary, in the Ambala Cantonment. According to herself, she
was a topper in school.
She is trained in Hindustani classical music. Having always wanted to
become an investment banker, she went on to study at the Manchester
Business School in the UK and obtained a triple honours degree in
Business, Finance and Economics. Due to the 2009 economic recession, she
was unable to get a job and returned to India. Chopra, who described
herself as a nerd and added that she was always fat, has reiterated that
she never wanted to become an actress and even used to hate actors,
stating that if the recession had not happened, she would never have
landed in Mumbai.
Chopra had originally intended to do an internship for a short time and
then return to the UK. She joined the film production company Yash Raj
Films and worked as a PR consultant in the marketing department,
coordinating interviews for other actors. While working there and
observing actors at close range, her perception about acting changed,
with Chopra citing that she felt like "I could do this as well". Her
colleagues would later tell that she was a "misfit in an office
situation". Director Maneesh Sharma, who worked under Yash Raj Films and
had met and interacted with Chopra, wanted her to play a role in his
second project Ladies VS Ricky Bahl and asked her to do a "dummy
audition for fun". Chopra remarked that she was "fooling around with a
camera" and performed some of the dialogues of Geet from the film Jab We
Met, never expecting the producer Aditya Chopra to see the tape. She
impressed the makers, with Maneesh Sharma expressing that Parineeti
Chopra was "phenomenal in the video test", and was promptly signed for a
three-film deal with the studio.
Career
Debut & Breakthrough (2011-present)
Ladies VS Ricky Bahl featured Chopra in a supporting role alongside
Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma. Although the film opened to mixed
reviews and was not a box office success, Chopra's performance was
widely appreciated by film critics. Taran Adarsh from Bollywood Hungama
wrote: "Parineeti Chopra springs a pleasant surprise. She has wonderful
screen presence and acts freely. In fact, the viewers would take to her
character instantly". Komal Nahta claimed that, "Of the three other
girls, Parineeti Chopra is undoubtedly the best. She has the best role,
the best lines and hers is the best performance among the three. In
fact, she provides a lot of light moments in the first half and, more
importantly, in the second half too".
Parineeti Chopra's second release, that saw her playing her first lead
female role, was the romantic drama Ishaqzaade opposite newcomer Arjun
Kapoor, produced by Yash Raj Films and directed by Habib Faisal of Do
Dooni Chaar fame. Critics again heaped praise on Chopra's performance.
Taran Adarsh commented: "Parineeti Chopra is simply fantastic in this
high-voltage drama. Playing the part of a spirited gun-toting girl, she
is not the regular timid, decorous, withdrawn Hindi film heroine. She
portrays the violent behavior coupled with the audacious and brash
attitude with aplomb". Komal Nahta commented: "Parineeti Chopra whom we
loved in Ladies VS Ricky Bahl, shines again in a complex and intense
role. She looks very good and acts like a song. Arjun and Parineeti’s
on-screen chemistry and excellent performances are the highlights of the
film". Blessy Chettiar from Daily News and Analysis mentioned that
"Parineeti Chopra steals the show in Ishaqzaade"; similarly CNN-IBN
critic Rajeev Masand labelled her as the "biggest strength of this
film". According to Box Office India, the film had grossed approximately
42.52 crores after three weeks and was termed a "super hit".
Chopra's third film is Beshram opposite Ranbir Kapoor, directed by
Abhinav Kashyap that would commence in October 2012 and become her first
venture outside the Yash Raj Films banner. Chopra has also been
confirmed for Maneesh Sharma's Next oposite Shahid Kapoor.
Awards and nominations
Chopra won almost all best-debututante awards of the season, including
the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut, the Star Screen Award for Most
Promising Newcomer - Female, the Zee Cine Award for Best Female Debut,
the Apsara Award for Best Female Debut, the Stardust Award for Superstar
of Tomorrow – Female, the IIFA Award for Star Debut of the Year –
Female and the IIFA Award for Best Supporting Actress, besides receiving
several nominations for Best Supporting Actress awards.
Speaking on sweeping the awards circuit and winning Best Debut, Chopra
said: "Whenever somebody becomes an actor the first thing they start
thinking about is awards. I had absolutely no expectations from
anything". She continued, "When the nominations started getting
announced that’s when I was like I want some awards and now I’m winning
them. I just cannot get over the fact that all this is happening to me
with my first film." Parineeti has won eight awards so far for her
performance.
